Uncovering the True Essence of Bravery

By Becky Hunt

When we think of bravery, we often imagine bold heroes, dramatic sacrifices, or fearless leaders. But in the Christian life, bravery looks different. It’s quieter, deeper, and often more challenging.

True bravery is the courage to follow Jesus, even when it’s hard.

It Takes Courage to Be a Disciple of Jesus

Choosing to follow Jesus is not always easy. In fact, He tells us it won’t be. To be His disciple means to live differently from the world around us. It means choosing love over comfort, truth over popularity, and faith over fear. The world may not understand this. Sometimes, it may even reject it.

Living a Christ-centered life can make you seem foolish in the eyes of others. But this is nothing new — Jesus Himself was misunderstood, rejected, and even hated. He invites us into that same path when He says we must “take up [our] cross.” This doesn’t mean seeking suffering, but rather embracing the uncertain and sacrificial parts of life with trust in God. It means standing firm in faith even when it costs us something.

Jesus also warned that His followers would face opposition: people may dislike or reject you because of your faith. But here’s the comforting truth — you are never alone in it.

God Does Not Leave Us

Even when following Jesus feels difficult, God promises to stay close to us. Over and over again in Scripture, we are reminded that He strengthens, sustains, and walks with us:

  • “The LORD himself will go before you; he will be with you, he will never fail you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8)

  • “They that hope in the LORD will renew their strength, they will soar as with eagles’ wings.” (Isaiah 40:31)

  • “God is able to make every grace abundant for you.” (2 Corinthians 9:8)

  • “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

  • “God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” (2 Timothy 1:7–9)

These aren’t just comforting words, they are promises. God gives us the strength we need, exactly when we need it.

Strength for a Purpose

God doesn’t just strengthen us so we can feel better; He strengthens us so we can live out our purpose: to know Him, love Him, and share Him with others.

Scripture reminds us that we are called into something bigger:

  • “I, the LORD, have called you for justice… to open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from confinement.” (Isaiah 42:6–7)

  • “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” (Matthew 28:19–20)

This mission can take many forms in everyday life:

  • Speaking out against injustice when it would be easier to stay silent

  • Gently sharing your faith with someone who is searching

  • Living in a way that reflects Christ’s love and mercy

  • Using the gifts of the Holy Spirit — like wisdom, courage, and understanding — to serve others

Bravery, in the Christian sense, is about being faithful.

Facing Fear with Trust

Fear is real. We all feel it — fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of not being enough. But fear does not come from God. It is often a tool that pulls us away from trust and into doubt. Instead of letting fear guide us, we are invited to place our trust in God. He is steady, faithful, and stronger than anything we face. When we lean on Him, fear begins to lose its power.

Prayers for Confidence Rooted in Christ

When you feel unsure or afraid, turn to prayer.

Here are two simple Scripture-based prayers you can lean on:

“I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” (Philippians 4:13)

Lord, remind me that I am not alone. Strengthen me to do what you are calling me to do.

“I do believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:24)

Jesus, I trust you, but I need your help. Meet me in my doubts and lead me forward.

A Final Encouragement

Being brave as a follower of Christ doesn’t mean you won’t feel afraid. It means choosing to trust God anyway. Step by step, day by day, He is forming your heart, strengthening your spirit, and guiding your path. And in that quiet, faithful courage, you will discover a deeper joy than the world could ever offer.
